Who should Obama nominate?

With John Paul Stevens announced retirement at the end of this Court term, who should President Obama appoint to take his place? Republicans have warned him that they might filibuster his nominee if he chooses someone too liberal. Below are links that provide information on some of his potential choices. Read over them and indicate which you think would be his best choice.

Diane Wood
Merrick Garland
Elana Kagan
Pamela Karlan
Kathleen Sullivan

This article reviews some of the potential candidates when Justice David Souter retired last year and was replaced by Sonia Sotomayor.

  1. I think President Obama should nominate Merrick Garland. He has been politically active since 1979. He is more than qualified and considered by many to be the leading candidate. Also, he is generally viewed as a moderate which would greatly increase his chances of congressional approval.

  2. I think Merrick Garland would be the best choice. In my opinion it would be best to get a moderate vs an extreme to the right or left side. He has had many years of experience. Maybe he is a candidate that everyone could agree on.

  3. My vote would have to be for Diane Wood. The Supreme Court needs another female justice. She is considered a conservative counterweight. And has quite a bit of courtroom experience. Following her I would choose Pamela Karlan and Kathleen Sullivan two openly lesbian candidates. I would not choose Elana Kagan due to the risk of moving the court substantially to the right also she does not have as much court room experience. I would not choose Merrick Garland for simpple fact of being male and I think we need a female.

  5. I think Elana Kagan would be the best nominee. She is well rounded and has had experience with Harvard (my favorite school). Even though it has nothing to do with her qualifications, I also like the fact that she is Jewish.

  7. I feel that Elana Kagan would be the best nominee. She seems to have enough experience. I like the fact that she is jewish, and I will still like her even if she is a lesbian. Ones sexual preference should have nothing to do with the fact she wants to be s justice.

  8. I like Mr. Garland as his nomination. His experience and moderate views would add great balance to the bench. I think an extremist is the last thing Obama needs.
